Marathon Township to Host a Labor Day Community Walk

Community encouraged to participate in Michigan’s Labor Day tradition

Trailhead of Southern Links Trailway in Columbiaville, MI – Does the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Walk sound like a good idea yet it’s too far away for you to participate?  This year you won’t need to travel all the way to St. Ignace to join in Michigan’s Labor Day walking tradition. Marathon Township will be hosting a Labor Day Community Walk to help increase the number of active people this Labor Day weekend.

Marathon Township is organizing the Mighty Mac in Marathon Community Walk on Labor Day, September 6th, starting at 8:00 AM at the Trailhead of the Southern Link Trailway in Columbiaville, MI, as part of the Labor Day Community Walks that are held throughout the state in conjunction with the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Walk. Community Walks help provide a similar experience to residents unable to participate in the annual walk across the Mighty Mac.

The virtual bridge walk will start at the trailhead of the Southern Links Trailway in Columbiaville and follow the trail 5.2 miles to the Otter Lake trailhead.  Shuttle service will be available to transport walkers back to Columbiaville. Participants may take part in the Might Mac in Marathon Community Walk between 8:00 AM-11:00 AM.  A certificate of participation will be awarded to each participant crossing the finish line in Otter Lake.

“We want our community to get out and get walking this Labor Day. We have an amazing 5.2 miles of paved trailway that meanders across the Holloway Reservoir and then onto the quaint village of Otter Lake, through some beautiful farmland and wooded areas, says Dawn Johnson, Marathon Township Clerk.  Bring your family and friends and come out and take part in the first annual Mighty Mac in Marathon Labor Day Walk.  Labor day is the traditional ”walk day” in Michigan and hosting a community walk is the perfect combination of family fun, physical activity and our State’s tradition”.

Marathon Township is one of several Michigan communities holding a Labor Day Community Walk. Walks like this are important steps toward helping citizens lead healthier, more physically active lives.  By hosting local walks Michigan communities are able to demonstrate their commitment to healthy living, physical activity and community involvement.

“By holding local events all across the state, we hope to double or even triple the number of walkers on Labor Day and bring attention to the importance of physical activity for the health of Michigan,” explains Marilyn Lieber, president and CEO of the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports.

“Every Labor Day, thousands of Michiganians participate in the annual Mackinac Bridge Walk, and as governor, I’m proud to lead the way across the bridge that links our beautiful peninsulas,” said Granholm.  “But now communities throughout the state can be part of this tradition.  I’m encouraging all Michigan families to spend this summer training for a walk on Labor Day, either at the Mighty Mac or in their hometown.”

A physically active Michigan means a healthier Michigan. Take advantage of the wonderful opportunities to enjoy Michigan’s beautiful parks, trails and lakes while hiking, biking and swimming your way to fitness and health.

SOUTHERN LINKS TRAILWAY: The second phase of the trail from Otter Lake to Millington is underway with a completion date of  Spring 2010. Once completed the trail will offer 10.2 miles of biking, hiking and horseback riding

A grand opening event was held in September 2009 to celebrate the first segment of the trail between Columbiaville and Otter Lake. The trailway is now used by hundreds of area residents on a daily basis.

The support of the entire community is needed to help maintain the trail. Please be mindful to pick-up litter, remove branches and weeds encroaching on the trail and to clean-up after your pets. It is a pleasure to offer this magnificent recreational asset to residents of our community. Donation boxes are now available at the trailheads in both Otter Lake and Columbiaville.  Any donations made will be used to maintain the trail and would be greatly appreciated. Check out the trailway website at www.southernlinkstrailway.com

Friends of the Southern Links Trailway is a group that promotes trail usage and raises funds to  support development of the trail, as well as provide volunteers to help with maintaining the trail. The group is always looking to recruit new members. They meet on the First Tuesday of the Month at 7:00 pm in the Otter Lake Community Center  Call Ray Benson at 810-691-8880
